AARP life insurance
AARP does not sell insurance. It licenses its name to New York Life, which underwrites and pays every policy carrying the AARP brand, and you must be a member to buy one.
Rating read from AM Best on 2 September 2026. AM Best calls A++ superior: the strongest assessment am best gives. How we check ratings.
The verdict
The financial strength behind it is the best available anywhere, because it is New York Life. What you are paying for is the brand and the convenience, and the heavily advertised guaranteed acceptance product carries a waiting period that most healthy applicants never needed to accept.
We do not represent AARP
This is an editorial review. We hold no appointment here and earn nothing if you buy one, which is exactly why we can be straight about it. The carriers we can actually write are listed here.
What is good and what is not
In its favour
- Underwritten by New York Life, the strongest rating AM Best gives
- Familiar brand, widely trusted by the age group buying these policies
- Guaranteed acceptance option genuinely accepts everyone in the age band
Against it
- Membership required before you can buy
- The advertised acceptance product carries a two year waiting period on natural death
- One company only, so no comparison across the market
- Frequently more expensive than an underwritten policy the same applicant would have qualified for
How it treats your health
The guaranteed acceptance product asks no health questions at all, which is why it carries a waiting period. That structure exists for people who genuinely cannot answer health questions favourably. Most people over fifty in reasonable health can pass the questions at an underwritten carrier and get full cover from day one instead, usually for less.
What it actually sells
Term and permanent life products marketed under the AARP name and issued by New York Life, including a guaranteed acceptance whole life policy sold heavily to older buyers.
The waiting period
The guaranteed acceptance product pays premiums plus interest rather than the face amount if death is from natural causes in the first two years. Accidental death is covered from day one. This is the single most important thing to check before buying one.
This is the single most misunderstood thing in this market, and it is where most people get sold the wrong policy. Our full explanation is in burial insurance with no waiting period.
What moves the price
Age, sex, face amount and product type. Membership is a separate annual cost.
Why there is no price on this page
We hold no rate tables, so any premium printed here would be invented. On a licensed site that is a compliance problem rather than a helpful touch. The honest number comes from running your age, state, health answers and coverage amount against the 25+ companies the agency can write, which takes a few minutes.
See what AARP would actually cost you
Six questions, about a minute. We run them across every company we can write, including this one where possible, and come back with real prices. A typical burial runs $15,395 once the cemetery is included, so that is the number worth covering.

Questions people ask about AARP
Does AARP underwrite its own life insurance?
No. New York Life underwrites and pays every AARP branded policy. AARP licenses its name and endorses the programme.
Does AARP life insurance have a waiting period?
The guaranteed acceptance product does, two years on natural death. If you can answer health questions, an underwritten policy elsewhere usually pays from day one and costs less.
Do I have to be an AARP member?
Yes, membership is required to buy, and it renews annually as a separate cost from the premium.
Compare it against the rest
One carrier is never the answer for everybody, because they disagree about health. The full scorecard shows every company we can write, with the verified AM Best grade and the date we read it.
