Americo burial insurance

Americo is built around speed. The application is short, the decision is usually immediate, and for a straightforward applicant the policy can be in force the same afternoon.

The verdict

A good middle option. Not the strongest balance sheet on our list and not the most forgiving underwriter, but it is quick, it is competitive, and it fills the gap between the strict carriers and the ones that take anybody.

What is good and what is not

In its favour

  • Point of sale decision on most applications, often within minutes
  • No medical exam, health questions only
  • Competitive on price for applicants aged 50 to 70
  • Straightforward product range with less tier confusion than some competitors

Against it

  • Issue ages start at 50, so it is no use for a younger applicant
  • Less forgiving than Transamerica on complicated health histories
  • Smaller company than the household names, which matters to some buyers

How it treats your health

A standard simplified issue knockout list, checked against the prescription database. Controlled chronic conditions are generally fine. Recent cardiac events, active cancer, oxygen use and dialysis are not. Americo sits roughly in the middle of the market for leniency, stricter than Transamerica, more forgiving than Mutual of Omaha.

What it actually sells

Simplified issue whole life sold for final expense, in an immediate benefit version and a graded version, with face amounts typically from $2,000 to $50,000.

The waiting period

No waiting period on the immediate benefit product for applicants who pass the health questions. The graded version pays a limited amount in the first two years for natural death and the full amount for accidental death from day one.

This is the single most misunderstood thing in this market, and it is where most people get sold the wrong policy. Our full explanation is in burial insurance with no waiting period.

What moves the price

Age, sex, tobacco use, face amount and state, plus which product version the health answers qualify you for.

Why there is no price on this page

We hold no rate tables, so any premium printed here would be invented. On a licensed site that is a compliance problem rather than a helpful touch. The honest number comes from running your age, state, health answers and coverage amount against the 25+ companies the agency can write, which takes a few minutes.

See what Americo would actually cost you

Six questions, about a minute. We run them across every company we can write, including this one, and come back with real prices. A typical burial runs $15,395 once the cemetery is included, so that is the number worth covering.

Questions people ask about Americo

How fast does Americo approve a burial insurance application?

Usually at the point of sale. Most applications get a decision during the call, and a policy that is approved can be in force the same day.

Does Americo require a medical exam?

No. It is simplified issue, which means health questions and a prescription database check rather than a nurse visit or bloodwork.
