Baltimore Life burial insurance

Baltimore Life is the carrier of last resort on our list, and we say that plainly. It writes applicants the others have turned down, and it is the only company we can place business with that sits below the Excellent tier at AM Best.

Rating read from AM Best on 2 September 2026. AM Best calls B++ good: a good ability to meet obligations, with a thinner cushion. How we check ratings.

The verdict

A reasonable answer when the stronger carriers have all said no, and a poor answer when they have not. A B++ rating is not a warning that a claim will go unpaid, it means a thinner surplus cushion than the A rated alternatives. If an A rated carrier will write you at a similar price, take the A rated carrier.

What is good and what is not

In its favour

  • Will consider applicants declined by stricter carriers
  • A long established company, writing since the nineteenth century
  • Real underwriting rather than guaranteed acceptance, so day one coverage is possible

Against it

  • The only carrier on our list rated below the Excellent tier
  • A thinner surplus cushion than every alternative we can offer
  • Rarely the cheapest for an applicant who has other options

How it treats your health

More accommodating than most, which is its purpose here. It is still a real underwriter with a knockout list, so it is not an alternative to guaranteed acceptance for someone in active treatment.

What it actually sells

Simplified issue whole life for final expense, in immediate and graded versions.

The waiting period

No waiting period on the immediate version, with the usual graded structure below it.

This is the single most misunderstood thing in this market, and it is where most people get sold the wrong policy. Our full explanation is in burial insurance with no waiting period.

What moves the price

Age, sex, tobacco, face amount, state and underwriting tier.

Why there is no price on this page

We hold no rate tables, so any premium printed here would be invented. On a licensed site that is a compliance problem rather than a helpful touch. The honest number comes from running your age, state, health answers and coverage amount against the 25+ companies the agency can write, which takes a few minutes.

See what Baltimore Life would actually cost you

Six questions, about a minute. We run them across every company we can write, including this one, and come back with real prices. A typical burial runs $15,395 once the cemetery is included, so that is the number worth covering.

Questions people ask about Baltimore Life

Is a B++ rated insurance company safe?

AM Best calls B++ Good, meaning an assessment that the company can meet its obligations. It sits below the Excellent tier and reflects a smaller cushion than an A rated carrier. For a small policy at a company writing for well over a century, that is a reasonable trade when a stronger carrier will not offer you a level benefit policy. It is not a reasonable trade when one will.
