Foresters Financial burial insurance

Foresters is a fraternal benefit society rather than a conventional insurer, which means buying a policy makes you a member, and membership comes with benefits that have nothing to do with the death benefit.

The verdict

Competitive pricing with a genuine extra on top. The member benefits, which include some scholarship and legal document services, are real but should not be the reason you buy. Buy it if the price and the underwriting fit, and treat the membership as a bonus.

What is good and what is not

In its favour

  • Membership benefits included at no extra premium
  • Competitive rates across most age bands
  • Reasonable underwriting, more forgiving than the strictest carriers
  • Long history, founded in the nineteenth century

Against it

  • The fraternal structure confuses some buyers who expect a conventional insurer
  • Member benefits are frequently oversold by agents as if they were the product
  • Issue ages start at 50

How it treats your health

A standard simplified issue approach with a knockout list and a prescription check. Controlled diabetes, treated blood pressure and historic conditions are generally acceptable. Active serious illness, oxygen use, dialysis and cognitive diagnoses are not.

What it actually sells

Simplified issue whole life for final expense, sold in tiers, with the top tier paying in full from day one. Face amounts typically $5,000 to $35,000.

The waiting period

No waiting period on the top tier. Lower tiers carry the usual two year graded structure on natural death.

This is the single most misunderstood thing in this market, and it is where most people get sold the wrong policy. Our full explanation is in burial insurance with no waiting period.

What moves the price

Age, sex, tobacco, face amount, state and underwriting tier. Membership itself does not change the premium.

Why there is no price on this page

We hold no rate tables, so any premium printed here would be invented. On a licensed site that is a compliance problem rather than a helpful touch. The honest number comes from running your age, state, health answers and coverage amount against the 25+ companies the agency can write, which takes a few minutes.

See what Foresters Financial would actually cost you

Six questions, about a minute. We run them across every company we can write, including this one, and come back with real prices. A typical burial runs $15,395 once the cemetery is included, so that is the number worth covering.

Questions people ask about Foresters Financial

What is a fraternal benefit society?

A member owned organisation that sells insurance to its members and returns some of its surplus as member benefits rather than shareholder profit. For your purposes the policy works the same way any other whole life policy does, and the death benefit is paid the same way.

Are the Foresters member benefits worth anything?

Some of them, genuinely. They are not worth choosing a worse policy for. Compare the premium and the underwriting first, then count the membership as a bonus if Foresters wins on those.
