The cheapest burial insurance

The lowest advertised premium is almost never the cheapest policy, because the cheapest adverts are for cover that shrinks with age or waits two years to pay. Here is what actually reduces the cost.

Cheap and cheapest are not the same thing

A policy costing $9.95 a month that pays out $700 is far more expensive, per dollar of coverage, than one costing $45 a month that pays $12,000. Compare what a policy pays against what it costs, never the monthly figure on its own. That single habit is worth more than everything else on this page.

The six things that genuinely reduce what you pay

In rough order of how much they are worth.

01

Buy it younger, by even a year

The largest single lever

Age at application sets the premium and then fixes it for life. Every birthday costs you money permanently, and the jump between age bands in the seventies is steep. There is no version of this where waiting is cheaper.

02

Size it to the real bill, not a round number

Often several thousand in cover

Most people ask for $10,000 because it is a round number. A cremation with a service averages $6,280 and a direct cremation $2,202, while a full burial with the cemetery runs $15,395. Work out which funeral you actually want and buy that, rather than paying for cover you do not need or leaving a gap you did not notice.

03

Answer the health questions

Frequently 30% or more

Guaranteed acceptance costs substantially more per dollar of coverage and makes you wait two years, because it asks nothing. If you can pass the questions, an underwritten policy is cheaper and pays from day one. Most people over fifty in reasonable health can pass them and never find out because nobody asked.

04

Have more than one carrier quoted

Commonly a third between the best and worst offer

Carriers disagree about health, and the spread between the cheapest and dearest offer for the same person is routinely large. A captive agent shows you one company. This is the entire argument for an independent one.

05

Stop using tobacco for twelve months

Often close to double the premium

Tobacco rates are typically far higher than non-tobacco, and most carriers ask about the last twelve months. If you are close to a year clear, waiting is worth real money. Some carriers, American Amicable among them, load tobacco more lightly than the market.

06

Pay annually if you can

A few percent

Monthly billing carries a modal factor at most carriers, so twelve monthly payments cost more than one annual one. Small, but it is free money if the cash flow works.

The three ways a cheap policy turns out expensive

The other half of the equation

The cheapest way to cover a funeral is partly to spend less on the funeral. A direct cremation averages $2,202 against $15,395 for a full burial with the cemetery, and the same funeral home will quote several hundred dollars apart from its neighbour for identical work.

Common questions

What is the cheapest burial insurance for seniors?

For most people over fifty it is a simplified issue whole life policy where the health questions have been answered, sized to the funeral you actually want rather than a round number, and quoted across several carriers. Guaranteed acceptance is almost always the most expensive way to buy cover.

Is there cheap burial insurance with no waiting period?

Yes, and it is usually cheaper than the waiting period version. Most burial insurance pays from day one if you can answer the health questions. The waiting period belongs to policies that ask nothing, and asking nothing is what makes them expensive.

What is the cheapest life insurance for seniors over 85?

The market narrows sharply at 85. Several carriers stop issuing, and the ones that continue are usually writing guaranteed acceptance. It is still worth having the questions asked, because a carrier that will underwrite you at that age is meaningfully cheaper than one that will not.

Can I get free burial insurance?

No. Adverts offering free burial insurance are selling a lead form or a very small policy with a waiting period. If there is no money and someone has already died, the assistance programmes are the real answer.
